Rustem Zagidullin: Discrepancies in the names of settlements in Tatarstan have been eliminated

9 October 2024, Wednesday

The Ministry of Justice of the Republic of Tatarstan maintains the Register of Administrative-Territorial Units and Settlements. At the federal level, information about settlements is included in the State Catalog of Geographical Names.

The Minister of Justice of the Republic of Tatarstan Rustem Zagidullin, speaking with a report at a meeting of the State Council, reported that from 2019 to 2022, work was carried out to standardize the names of the republic's settlements contained in the republican Register and the State Catalog of Geographical Names.

During the work, discrepancies were identified in the names of 38 settlements in 21 municipal districts. The main discrepancies are related to the use of hyphens, writing lowercase and uppercase letters, as well as changing letters in accordance with the historically established name.

«To eliminate discrepancies, reference books of administrative-territorial divisions, archival materials and acts of public authorities were studied. The names were adjusted taking into account historical data, the expert opinion of the Institute of Language, Literature and Art named after Galimdzhan Ibragimov of the Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Tatarstan and the opinion of residents of the settlements», - he explained.

In relation to three settlements, in connection with the choice of citizens of the names contained in the State Catalogue, amendments were made to the laws of the republic on the establishment of boundaries and the status of municipalities. In other cases, the names contained in the republican Register were retained, and the corresponding amendments were made to the State Catalogue.

«The work to eliminate discrepancies in the names of settlements has been completed»,- the minister summed up.
